A little background...

Being a nurse is probably one of the best things that's ever happened to me! When I hear people complain about their jobs, salaries, mental and physical exhaustion, I can do nothing but smile with pride about how much I love my job.

Do not misunderstand me, nursing is one of the most demanding jobs in society at the moment. But I can also assure you, it is so rewarding that the feeling of fulfillment outweighs all the negatives, especially in pediatrics!

I have been a pediatric cardiac nurse for almost 7 years. I cannot emphasize enough how rewarding working with kids is. It is a continuous need for play therapy and love. I highly recommend for any nurse who is getting close to a burnout, to try a career in peds!

I have also been a travel nurse for the past 2 years. I highly recommend that ANY nurse, from every department, every floor, every hospital and city in this world do a Travel Nursing contract at least once, because it is an unbelievable experience!

Let's explore the Pros and Cons of Travel Nursing... And if you think the travel money is the greatest benefits of Travel Nursing, think twice...

Benefits/Pros of Travel Nursing!

  • TRAVEL MONEY:

    • Travel contracts offer higher income due to non-taxable stipends for housing and meals. So, if you plan well your finances (primary residence expenses, monthly rent in new city and other expenses) during your contract, you can take home a lot of money!

  • UNBELIEVABLE NURSING GROWTH:

    • When you go to a new hospital as a Travel Nurse, you are exposed to new ways of performing the same tasks you have been doing for the past few years. You realize there is more than one proper way to do the cares for your patients. You learn a new perspective about teamwork, culture and hospital policy. This will only make you grow as a nurse and rapidly improve your skills and critical thinking!

  • SOCIAL SKILLS:

    • If you do a travel contract, you probably do not have any friends in the new city, YET! People usually welcome travel nurses in a beautiful way. You will make new friends and build new relationships with your co-workers on day 1. Travel Nursing forces you, in a positive way, to get out of comfort zone and improve your social skills to make the best of this experience.

  • TRAVEL:

    • EXACTLY! The greatest benefit of Travel Nursing is to travel. Going to any place for a week is okay... Moving permanently to your favorite city might not be possible... So, you get the best of both worlds: having the opportunity to fully experience your favorite places, without the commitment of moving your whole life there. Have you ever dreamed of living in Manhattan? Oceanfront, walking distance to the water? Mountain cabin in Colorado during ski season? Travel Nursing will make it possible!

Challenges/Cons of Travel Nursing!

  • HOUSING:

    • Finding the right furnished apartment, in the right location, for the right price, can be one of the biggest challenges of Travel Nursing. Cost of living keeps getting higher, while Travel contracts pay less and less every time. If you are very careful and can detect scam, Facebook or Craigslist can help you save some money! On the other hand, Airbnb and platforms like Furnished Finder can provide a safer environment., but safety comes at a higher price.

    • Nomad World offers a new market through a meaningful platform for the community where safety and affordability go hand in hand.

    • Remember! You are supposed to keep a primary residence in the city you were living, in order to, legally, receive the tax-free stipends. So, basically, they make you double-pay housing (once for your primary residence, and once for the rental you need in the city you are travelling to). We will bring more content about HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON HOUSING DURING YOUR TRAVEL CONTRACTS.

  • EXPENSES:

    • Moving to a new city implies new expenses. You can only bring so much in your luggage. In addition to groceries and self-care products, you should probably plan to buy new bedding, bath towels, and maybe, even pillows! We will bring more content about TRAVEL NURSING ESSENTIALS: THINGS I SHOULD HAVE BROUGHT.

  • ADAPTABILITY:

    • New city, new home, new hospital, new people, new weather, new prices, NEW PARKING RULES! Every "new" can add more stress and it can become overwhelming at the beginning. Being able to relax and trust the process is very important to find your new routine as soon as possible. We will bring more content about HOW TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH AS A TRAVEL NURSE.
